Imusa Steamer Pot, Aluminum, 32-Quart Handles Leaked., (What's this?) If you have any intention of using these pots in an application that requires you to take the water level past the handle rivets (which is about 12 quarts for the 20 quart version) purchase a different pot. I ordered two and both of them arrived with leaky handle rivets. They seem to be decent pots otherwise.
A pretty good investment, (What's this?) First things first, this thing is HUGE!!! I use it for steaming dumplings and seafood and I never have a concern if it will all fit. It heats up quickly and I'm not really concerned about any possibly of it breaking.
There are a few minor drawbacks. The aluminum construction, while heating up quickly (aluminum has a low specific heat and transfers heat quickly, that's why radiators and heatsinks are made from it) discolors with repeated heat cycles. The brushed surface can be tricky to keep clean. Besides that, there's nothing really bad about it. If you're not really concerned with looks and you just want a huge steamer to make some awesome food, this is a sure shot.
As of Nov. 2011, not the one you want for making a micro UDS, (What's this?) This is probably fine as a steamer, although the aluminum is very thin gauge. I'd be hesitant to use it for anything other than steaming/boiling -- I think it's so thin you'd have trouble with hot spots and scorching.
If, like me, you bought this with the idea of using it together with a Weber Smokey Joe to make a micro/mini ugly drum smoker, you will probably disappointed. As of November 2011, Amazon is selling the made in Colombia version, which is not the same diameter as the made in China version. As a result, it is not compatible with the Smokey Joe lid and won't work for that purpose.
Way over-priced, A local supermarket chain (HEB in Texas) sells a 24 quart version with a glass cover and insulated handles from the same company for $30.
GREAT BIG "ANYTHING" STEAMER!, The Imusa Steamer Pot, 20 Quart is a well known Brand in Latin American Countries, it was given to me as a Gift last year. It is made out of Heavy Gauge Aluminum and is very Light anybody can lift it...and is BIG! It comes with the Steamer Insert and holds a lot of Tamales. I make the Traditional Tamales with either Pork or Chicken, preferably the second one and I like to use California Chiles they are Mild making a Vibrant Red Sauce, I get the "Masa" from a Local Mexican Market, it Saved time and it turned out Great! I cook them in batches and make Hundreds during the Holidays giving some of them away
Even though this Steamer doesn't have a flimsy Lid, I always like to put a brick wrapped in Aluminum Foil on Top of it to keep the Steam in. The Imusa Steamer does a Great Job I never ran out of water and I steam my Tamales for over 2 Hours, with no problems. It measures exactly, 12 inches wide by 10 inches high, the space between the bottom of the Pot and the Steamer Insert is about 2 1/2 Inches High...a lot of Water. I wash the Pot by hand because I want to keep it looking nice for a long time.
it was functional, i bought this pot primarily for canning, but plan to make tamales down the road. i got it at target (in store) for $23, so that was nice.
BUT, my pot discolored a bit. looks like it will scrap off, but that kind of sucked. my handles didn't leak, though. it also took forever and a day for the water to get hot enough to be safe for canning.
Tamale steamer, (What's this?)
Steamer Pot for Tamales, (
Mind shipped dented too, (What's this?) If this were around $30, it would be okay, but for the price, I expected better durability. If it arrives with a dent, I can only imagine a year later after heavy usage with steaming seafood and washing it (which of course is tough to do delicately with a pot this size), it will look pretty bad.
Perfect steamer pot for southern homes, (What's this?) After reading some of the reviews on this item, I was a little nervous to purchase it. I recently moved south and theres tons of fresh seafood begging to be steamed so I gave it a try. To my surprise, I found alot of the reviews to be incorrect in my opinion. I absolutely love this pot, it steamed 12 large male blue crab to perfection and was a very easy clean up.
